What does a "boiler suit" have to do with being a lesbian? I heard this on an episode of "Absolutely Fabulous," where Edina desperatley wants her square daughter Saffy to be a lesbian so she'll be interesting. Edina tells her to get a "boiler suit" and a haircut; is it a British slang for something?

A boiler suit / coverall /catsuit. Usually worn to protect outer and everyday clothing by male manual workers. The car mechanic, the street cleaner, the electrician and plumber would generally be seen in this type of clothing when working.

Heavy dykes are sometimes called demon dykes because they traditionally wore jeans and demin jackets...dressing like men. That's where it comes from..!

It's Edina's stupid idea of what lesbians are like - heavily butch diesel dykes, dressing like Rosie the Riveter all the time.
